La Sylphide: We Can Expect Tears

La+Sylphide%3A+We+Can+Expect+Tears

This year Dance Production is proud to present La Sylphide, a performance that embodies both fun and drama. The plot focuses on James, his fiance Effie, and the Sylphide who changes everything. Will James throw everything away for what he thinks is true love?
La Sylphide kicks off with a celebratory first act, with ominous but romantic moments. However, in the second act, the drama will draw the audience in emotionally.
YiLin Lee (12) says, “We’ve even had cast members and Ms. Q cry during rehearsal!”
The production will cover a plethora of styles: from ballroom to 80’s inspired hip hop, country line dancing to contemporary ballet.
“Ms. Lagerquist and I think of the story we are trying to tell, find music that will work with the concept and fit the mood of the scene, then we work out movement that fits all of the above,” says Mrs. Flemming. “Ms. Sakamoto also choreographed a couple of scenes as well.”
This production will be one of the first to have so many major group roles. Previously, the dance production relied heavily on the lead roles but this year’s  group roles give younger dancers a chance to take on bigger roles.
YiLin says, “My favorite part of the dance production has to be the first rehearsal we had on stage with the set. Every year, moving from the dance studio to the stage is so scary because we have to readjust formations to fit the set.”
This year the highest platform on the set is elevated quite high and it’s definitely exhilarating for the dancers.
“There is a sense of anticipation and excitement in the air for everyone, and this energy gets everyone nervous and ready for show week,” says YiLin.
After months of preparation, finding the right music, working out how to move 30-40 people in patterns and partnering, the choreographers and dancers have been extremely involved in the production and have formed a close-knit community.
YiLin says, “I remember looking up right when my scene had ended, and seeing some of the dancers begin to tear up with joy. That rehearsal was when I first felt a sense of community within dance production, and I couldn’t be happier dancing with each and every person in the case of La Sylphide.”
Make sure you come to see the performances for what is bound to be a spectacular show!
