On Oct. 25, the MLB World Series begins between the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Dodgers. This is the first World Series matchup, since 1970, that features two 100-win teams, and the winner of the best-of-seven series will crown the 113th MLB champion.
After going 101-61, the Astros won the American League West, earning them a spot in the MLB postseason. First, the Astros quickly defeated the Boston Red Sox 3-1, in the second round of the American League playoffs, to take on the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series (ALCS). In a tight seven-game series, the Astros defeated the Wild Card winners four games to three, to advance to its second World Series in franchise history. All eyes will be on AL MVP candidate Jose Altuve, who has a batting average of .400, five home runs, and eight runs batted in the postseason so far. On the mound, veteran starting pitcher Justin Verlander has been dominant throughout the playoffs, winning all four of the games that he has pitched in with a earned run average of 1.46. Verlander, who won the ALCS MVP, along with Altuve, will look to take down the Dodgers to bring Houston its first World Series title.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers earned its spot in the postseason by winning the National League West with this year’s best regular season record: 104-58. The Dodgers’ postseason has been relatively easy, defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0 in the second round of the National League playoffs, and then the reigning World Series champions, the Chicago Cubs, 4-1 in the National League Championship Series (NLCS). As expected, NL Cy Young candidate Clayton Kershaw, has been solid, winning two games for the Dodgers with 16 strikeouts throughout the postseason. However, Yu Darvish has been the star on the mound thus far, winning both of the games that he has started with a 1.59 ERA. In the batter’s box, NLCS MVP Justin Turner played spectacularly with three home runs, 12 RBIs and a .387 batting average. It has been 29 years since the Dodgers have made it to the World Series, and the team hopes to win its seventh World Series title.
Varsity baseball player Joseph Lin (‘20) says, “The Dodgers will probably win easily, but if the Astros finally wins a World Series title, it would be a great story.” Watch the MLB World Series on Fox Sports.
