Lace The Love Club

President: Steffie Lee (‘22)

1. What are the goals and mission of your club?
Our mission is donating shoes to Africa to help prevent jigger infestations (foot infection). Using the money we raise, we will donate to many different organizations, such as Souls4Soles, Step30 and the ASHE foundation who are all helping with foot disease issues.

2. What types of activities will you run?
We will host shoe thrifts, shoe drives, food sales, and some other activities to be decided later because of COVID-19.

3. Why should people join your club?
People should definitely join if they want to help with the serious issue happening in Africa. Many people in Africa are unable to work or go to school because of these diseases and infections.

They can learn a unique skill! Also it’s a good place to make new friends with similar interests.

Writers House

Presidents: Emma Kuo (‘23) Stella Wu (‘24)

1. What are the goals and mission of your club?
Our goal is to expand on existing communities (Expression Magazine, the workshop classes, etc.) and work with them to further foster the creative writing talent at TAS. We will be connecting all school divisions to activities that will inspire and support them to create pieces of their own, while also promoting awareness of writing opportunities. As our name implies, we want to create a “Writers’ House” that gives students access to a casual environment that is frequently available for students who may not have the time in their schedules to take additional creative writing courses, or would like to work on personal projects in their free time. Our mission is to inspire, sup

2. What types of activities will you run?
We will have three main types of activities members can choose to participate in.
First and foremost, we are glad to be working with the other school divisions, which includes activities with LS (involves games and a bit of teaching) and activities with the MS writing club.
Moreover, we will be fostering a welcoming community through casual drop-in writing sessions hosted for high school students. We will additionally be working with Expression Magazine to host larger workshops for those who are interested.
If you are interested in writing of any sort, we are also funding and providing both professional and peer support for opportunities including international competitions (eg. YoungArts awards, New York Times Writing Competitions, etc.), submissions to websites and journals, as well as any personal projects you would like to work on!

3. Why should people join your club?
If you’re interested in submitting to competitions, our club funds go directly to members’ submission fees. Our members will not only have access to numerous writing opportunities and the benefits that come from them, but also a community that we hope to grow this year across all divisions of TAS. Our club is very casual and has a variety of opportunities, so even those with tight schedules will be able to participate 🙂

Law Society Club

Presidents: Hector Liu (‘23), Stevin Yang (‘23)

1. What are the goals and mission of your club?
The goal of the club is to give an opportunity for students to learn about the American legal system through a series of in-depth case review/research, and eventually a mock-trial for our club members. Whether it may be through being a judge, attorney, or a member of a jury, students will gain insight into the way the law functions and is interpreted. Furthermore, we hope the insights gained from our guest speakers will inspire students to devote themselves more towards the club, and ascertain whether the career of law is right for them. Our mission is to foster a community of students that aspire to pursue a legal career, striving to provide them with opportunities to explore, learn, and potentially apply the law.

2. What types of activities will you run?
We will be creating lessons for our members to learn about the law in America. At the beginning of Q2, our club will be hosting a mock trial so members can get a more hands-on experience. In addition, we will be inviting lawyers to come as guest speakers and share their experiences. Lastly, we are planning for the possibility of having in-person tours of law firms in Taipei if conditions allow.

3. Why should people join your club?
Besides their passion in the subject of law, people should join our club if they are interested in exploring a subject that is often overlooked in a normal school curriculum. Furthermore, through our guest speakers and mock trials, members will develop argumentative and research skills that can help set them for success in the future.

AFC (Alliance Football Community)

Presidents: Jonathan Peng (‘24), Jeffrey Ma (‘23), Ian Teng (‘23)

1. What are the goals and mission of your club?
The mission of Alliance FC is to provide underprivileged Taiwanese kids with soccer equipment and a better understanding of soccer. We seek to promote sustainability and make the most use of soccer equipment that TAS students and the community have but may no longer need. We aim to start at the grassroots level in Taiwan and help Taiwan develop a strong foundation in soccer.

2. What types of activities will you run?
We will have visits to certain schools, where we hand them the collected equipment, present the values that soccer holds, share relevant soccer information, and play soccer with them. Finally, we will host club sales and Fifa gaming tournaments in which profit will go to the purchase of equipment for those we cannot gather from donations.

3. Why should people join your club?
We are passionate about soccer, but this club is more than simply playing soccer. We hope to spread the love of the game in the TAS community, as well as in Taiwan. We provide underprivileged Taiwanese kids who are passionate about soccer with equipment and programs, hoping to instill in them a passion for soccer and its benefits.

Criminal Justice Club

President: Mira Baba (‘24)

1. What are the goals and mission of your club?
In light of the drastic increase in racially motivated hate crimes, I believe it is imperative that students understand the legal structures that we operate within. Promoting awareness and understanding of the law, specifically how it impacts POC, will give people knowledge that they can take with them outside of TAS as we progress into levels of higher education. Rarely is there a chance to learn about the intersection of student engagement and criminal justice in the classroom, so I wanted to provide a platform that I can use to educate others about the injustices that so many face as a result of a discriminatory justice system.

2. What activities will you run?
Because the goal of the club is to start a conversation about
injustices happening now, most of the time (the club will meet about 1 to 2 times a month) will be focused on getting familiar with the criminal justice system. Activities will include, but are not limited to, focusing on identifying and solving challenges within the criminal justice system through asking questions like what are the root causes of crime? What are the solutions to crime? Discussing questions such as these and sharing our ideas about them will hopefully better educate everyone! Another activity will be either an in-person or virtual presentation, if approved, about the problems that exist now and what we as a community can do to ensure that we do our best to prevent these problems. In order to put this together, some meetings will be dedicated to researching relevant information so that the presentation can be as helpful as possible.

3. Why should people join your club?
Now more than ever, it is teenagers that raise awareness and get upset over social injustices. I want to use this club as a space where we can all identify and locate injustice and have free, open discussions about issues so that we can become a better-educated community. Joining this club is a great opportunity to help people possibly discover a hidden passion behind social advocacy and law. But beyond educating yourself, it can also help you connect with others! Themes of racial and gender-based violence within the justice system aren’t talked about in class a lot, so discussing these topics can be a great way to get to know new people and have meaningful conversations with potential friends.

Photography Club

President: Alexandra Chen (‘24)

1. What are the goals and mission of your club?
Photography Club serves as a creative outlet for students who enjoy photography. Students will be able to choose either film or digital photography (whatever they like), and have their own choice in deciding what theme to photograph. You do not need to be skilled or even know how to handle cameras or the equipment to join the club, we will be there to help you. People who would like to capture their memories in high school should definitely feel free to join our club.

2. What activities will you run?
Activities we hope to run include: fun outdoor trips to photogenic/scenic spots, photo challenges, and hopefully to hold an exhibition (when covid gets better).

3. Why should people join your club?
Students who like taking pictures and photography should come join! We offer both digital and film photography, so everyone is welcome. I personally love using a film camera and enjoy taking random pictures of people and scenery 🙂

FAT (Food And Therapy) Club

President: Natalie Huang (‘22), Mathew Ho (‘22)

1. What are the goals and mission of your club?
Food And Therapy Club is based on the concept that food can be the connector that brings people together. The FAT Club aims to become a safe place to promote mental health and wellness for students to talk about their thoughts and problems. Students can share their challenges and difficulties through their love of food and thus creating a more casual and relaxed atmosphere where people feel more at ease to converse.

2. What activities will you run?
We plan to select a theme for a picnic gathering. This is a great opportunity for students to talk about whatever that is on their mind and to make new friends. We’ll also plan some fun games and activities for all high schoolers to participate in.

3. Why should people join your club?
People should join our club because this is a great opportunity for fellow students to actually interact with one another. I believe this is important because this could help build a stronger community.

Home For The Night

President: Evelyn Hou (‘24), Jenesse Lo (‘24)

1. What are the goals and mission of your club?
Our mission is to support and aid the homeless who are not just in need of shelter but lack basic human rights to safety, hygiene, and health as well.

2. What activities will you run?
Our club provides many activities including doing food sales, shopping for care packages and packaging them as well. The packages will be delivered to a local homeless shelter in Taipei. We are also planning to go volunteer at a local soup kitchen.

3. Why should people join your club?
People should join our club because we raise awareness and advocate for the less privileged. Our club is also low commitment and members can sign up for any of our many outings and events.

K2

President: Clint Lin (‘22)

1. What are the goals and mission of your club?
Our goal is to promote the hobby of custom mechanical keyboards and use it as a gateway to get more people interested in engineering. By enabling students to interact with the equipment we have in the tech cube, it’ll help them better transition into other robotics related activities such as VEX or FRC. The mission for our club is to aid families who have kids or relatives that have special needs and are unable to provide them with daily necessities due to their financial situation. We hope that by doing so, we can help students realize that it is possible to help change the world through different means while learning how to be organized and work as a team.

2. What activities will you run?
We will be hosting monthly club meetings. These meetings will mostly be workshops and lessons to teach people how to design and build their own custom 1:1 mechanical keyboard from scratch or teach them how to assemble from a kit. From time to time we will have fun activities, challenges, and club outings to get people more engaged with what they’re doing. We will also fundraise for a special needs home in Hualien so we will be doing club sales for parts and laptop stickers.

3. Why should people join your club?
People should join our club because the keyboard is something each and every person at TAS uses on a daily basis. Why not make the time you use daily something special to you and built for and by you. We want our club to enable people to take pride in something so simple yet so complex and we want people to feel the same joy we do when we create something. All of this is also with the added bonus of helping aid a special needs home in Hualien.

International Culture Club

Presidents: Mira Baba (‘24), Carolyn Kang (‘24)

1. What are the goals and mission of your club?
Our club’s goal is to unite students and bring people of different backgrounds together. Especially in this day and age, people are so quick to judge others based on their appearance and where they come from. We hope that through discussing different cultures and embracing their differences, we can create a more accepting and understanding community.

2. What types of activities will you run?
We plan to have fun games that test people’s knowledge of cultures (kahoot, trivia, and other interactive activities)! Each club meeting after the first couple introductory ones will be focused on discovering and understanding one specific culture from anywhere in the world.

3. Why should people join your club?
Many people struggle to find a place where they fit in, and hopefully our club can provide a safe space for everyone to come and feel like they belong. With that being said, people should join our club to form long-lasting friendships with others, and anyone with an interest in teaching others about their cultural background can use this club to spread awareness about their own values.

Jumbo Jazz Jam

President: Ethan Lin (‘22)

1. What are the goals and mission of your club?
Jumbo Jazz Jam, or JJJ, is a music-filled club where you will hear jazz music all the time. Our goal is for students who aren’t enrolled in a music course to practice, play, and perform jazz music. Club members can create multiple combos (small groups) and choose their preferred piece and style. We hope that students can enjoy the music genre of jazz in JJJ outside of the school curriculum.

2. What types of activities will you run?
We will host concerts in places like Black Box Theater or Small Theater, etc. Club members and hopefully other students will form their small combo (a small group of people) and perform 1 to 3 pieces or more if wanted. To prepare club members for the concerts, we will host club meetings to teach members some jazz theories and improvisation.

3. Why should people join your club?
Since our goal is to expose jazz to people who don’t have the opportunity to take band courses due to scheduling conflicts, we want to invite anyone who is interested in jazz or wants a place where they can practice and enjoy music.

Rock Climbing Club

President: Chloe Hei (‘24)

1. What are the goals and mission of your club?
To inspire students to rock climb fostering a community where passion leads to physical and mental wellness.

2. What types of activities will you run?
We will meet weekly in the rock climbing gym to climb as well as going on outings to outdoor and indoor rock climbing places.

3. Why should people join your club?
To have fun with their friends through rock climbing and if they want to improve their rock climbing skills.

3D Animation & VR Club

President: Tyler Leu (‘23)

1. What are the goals and mission of your club?
The goal of 3D animation and VR club is for students to have an experience to create 3D animation or virtual reality content, from pre-production to post-production.

2. What types of activities will you run?
Students will create ideas together and work in a team oriented project to create 3D content.

3. Why should people join your club?
It will be a lot of fun! Who doesn’t like video games or 3d animation films?
