As the school year comes to an end, The Blue & Gold (The B&G) bids farewell to two of its editors: Editor-in-Chief Erin W. (’25), who is graduating, and Managing Editor of Articles Sofia V. (’26), who will be moving to San Diego. They have been a model of dedication to staff writers and their commitment to journalism has left a lasting impression in the TAS community.
Erin W. (‘25)
Erin Wu (‘25) is the Editor-In-Chief of The Blue and Gold (The B&G). She has been at The B&G for three years, starting as a staff writer in her sophomore year. As Editor-In-Chief, Erin makes the final decisions for The B&G as well as writing regular articles. Outside of journalism, Erin is also interested in reading, photography and film.
Erin initially wanted to join The B&G as she was “drawn to a different kind of writing” and wanted to try writing that was different from the analytical writing that she did in English class.
For Erin, being in The Blue and Gold has taught her a wide variety of skills that are necessary in different subjects and many aspects of life. For example, being in The B&G has allowed Erin to extensively develop her social skills, as well as teaching her to stay up to date with current events. Writing opinion articles has also helped her voice her own opinions as well.
“Even if you don’t go to journalism in the future, learning journalism can teach you skills that are applicable in life,” said Erin.
Sofia V. (‘26)
Sofia V. (‘26) is the Managing Editor of Articles at The Blue and Gold (The B&G) and has been involved in the newspaper for two years. She joined in her sophomore year, as she is passionate about writing, communication and activism. Through The B&G, she was able to directly address the student body at TAS, shedding light on issues of the school community.
Along with Sofia’s involvement in The B&G, she is a captain for the Speech and Debate team and the president of Rise Up, the school’s feminist club, which advocates for women’s rights on the basis of equality for all genders. She is also committed to writing, and she submits her work to various creative writing competitions.
As an editor for The B&G, Sofia has learned the importance of not being afraid to write pieces that could result in dispute. She believes that important aspects of journalism are telling the truth, sharing more perspectives and enlightening people to issues around their society. “You shouldn’t let your fear of disagreement and pushback get in the way of the core purpose of journalism, which is to be honest and authentic,” she said. Sofia has been an embodiment of these values and has written articles on censorship and freedom of speech at TAS, and many more controversial topics that many shy away from.
Sofia wishes upon future B&G writers to be brave and continue to dig deeper and push boundaries, even with the threat of criticism. “Just put yourself out there because you never know…the reward could be much higher than the risk!”
