Castor H. (’26)
In the age of social media, it is easier than ever for teenagers to find clothing that fits them, causing fewer and fewer people to opt to create their own clothes. But at Taipei American School (TAS), student Castor H. (‘26) has attempted to change that narrative with his self-made sports apparel clothing brand, “Uncultured.” “I started Uncultured because, growing up, I enjoyed fashion and clothing. I also wanted to find a way to make money while in school,” said Castor. Unexpectedly, “Uncultured” became a school-wide phenomenon, turning the brand into a full-fledged business. Castor primarily sells shorts on his website, but has recently started selling compression shirts as well. His most popular releases have been his Black Dove shorts and Fluid shorts, which come in a variety of colors. Aside from just being Castor’s experimental clothing brand, “Uncultured” is also a charitable brand that is very well-connected within the Taiwanese community. The brand donates a portion of its sales to the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families (TFCF), a non-governmental organization that helps young children who are in vulnerable situations. “I chose TFCF because I myself believe in their cause, and I believe all children deserve a good life that is well supported by others,” said Castor.
Roslyn W. (’28)
At TAS, there are more than just producers of clothes, there are also clothing transformers. Roslyn W. (‘28) has started a business called “Juniper and Co.,” where she recycles old clothing and sews it into makeup pouches and pencil cases for anyone who feels like they need a stylistic change. Inspired by fashion shows and famous designers that she herself watched growing up, Roslyn uses the sewing machine she inherited from her grandmother to …. Despite her neat and aesthetically pleasing designs, Roslyn struggles to market her brand. “[When using social media,] you can’t really have reach unless you know the people around you.” That said, Roslyn continues to work hard to expand “Juniper and Co.,” working with vendors to obtain custom labels to expand her brand from a niche hobby to a legitimate business working 24/7.
