Released on April 2, “A Minecraft Movie” has quickly become a box office hit, grossing over $550 million worldwide in just two weeks, and a domestic gross of over $280 million. The movie has surpassed such films as “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Snow White,” and it is currently the highest-grossing film of the year that was released/produced in the United States.
Directed by Jared Hess, the film follows the adventures of Steve – the main character, played by Jack Black. Steve,“yearning for the mines” like he did as a kid, quits his dreadful corporate job and suits up, ready to go on an adventure. As he enters the mine he stumbles upon a portal to the overworld (the Minecraft dimension), and intentionally steps through it to begin his destiny.
Alongside that four other characters – Jackie, Tommy, Henry, and Jane – each dealing with their own personal crisis, also find themselves transported to the Minecraft world, setting the stage for an unexpected and epic journey.
A huge reason for the movie’s success is due to its ability to create viral trends and memes. For instance, a particular scene featuring the iconic phrase, “chicken jockey,” has sparked chaotic and enthusiastic reactions in cinemas. Other iconic scenes like Steve saying, “I am… Steve,” and “First we Mine, then Craft, lets MINECRAFT,” have also brought many viewers to cinemas.
While professional movie critics have given the movie a controversial rating of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, the nostalgia of minecraft has caused many movie watchers to flock to the cinemas. Plus the combination of powerful actors, funny lines, and cameos from famous Minecraft YouTubers, makes the movie popular amongst viewers. Despite 2025 being one of the worst years for movie productions, “A Minecraft Movie” was a standout hit. Audiences have overwhelmingly embraced the film, with many (including me) giving it a perfect 5/5 rating for its creativity, humor, and nostalgic charm.
With a sequel already in development, it is clear that this blocky adventure is going to dominate the movie industry.
