Science Fiction
You may have heard of the genre “science fiction” before, right? What’s the first thing that pops into your mind? Not a “real” genre? Or are you science savvy, and enjoy immersing yourself in these types of books? For lovers of SciFi, there’s great news. Aimed at self-proclaimed science geeks, a Science Fiction course will be open for juniors and seniors. A one year course with a “moderate” homework load, the class description explains that the course will be “examining the dominant themes and motifs of the genre… apocalypse, evolution, technology, theology, social unrest” and much more.
 
IBSL/HL Film Studies
Lights, camera, action! Looking to quench your undying thirst for video production? Want to sharpen up your behind-the-camera skills? The IBSL and IBHL Film Studies classes are just for you. These classes are one year long, which is surprising. Even though they are both IB courses, you’ll be able to take the SL class as a sophomore, as long as you have the prerequisite – “Film and Documentary Production.” The HL class is not officially open yet and will only start in the 2015-2016 school year. What are you waiting for? Grab your video cameras and get filming!
 
Advanced Research
Advanced Research in Nanotechnology – Explore the world nanoscale (1 billionth of a meter) and see things from a whole new perspective. Students who take this course will synthesize nanomaterials using TAS’ new carbon nanotube furnace and planetary ball mill. They will also have to ability to analyze their nano research on the schools own SEM (scanning electron microscope) and new AFM (atomic force microscope) which will enables 2D and 3D imaging and analysis.
Advanced Research in Synthetic Biology – The perfect mix of engineering and biology. In this course, students will get the opportunity to engineer DNA to make living cells perform specific actions. Want to make bacteria smell like banana? How about making a living cell glow florescent green or red? Students taking this course will become the TAS iGEM research team and at the end of this course, will get the opportunity to create a group project to present at the iGEM high school world Jamboree.
 
Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome
Valar Morghulis. Sound familiar to you? Greek? Latin? Neither! (It’s from the Game of Thrones series, if you didn’t know already.) If you didn’t understand this term, it’s time for you to brush up on your ancient Greek and Roman histoy with two completely new classes, Andcient Greek and Ancient Rome. Each course runs for one semester, allowing students to take both in one school year. If you want gladiators, Alexander the Great, and Julius Caesar bleeding to death on the Senate floor, then sign up for these classes and may Jupiter be with you!
