Looking to live a healthier life, mentally and physically? Check out these student health tips, brought to you by StuGov’s Health campaign:
1) Hit the sack: People that sleep around 7-8 hour per night on average live 5 years longer than those that sleep less.
2) Try meditation: Consistent meditation increases grey matter (your brain!) and decreases your blood pressure.
3) Break out those running shoes: Regular exercise gives you more energy and brain power.
4) Stretch it out: When you first wake up, stretch, it tells your body to wake up and you’ll have more energy.
5) Smile like crazy: Don’t be afraid to laugh, studies show that laughing frequently can boost the immune system.
6) Ban napping: Try not to take naps in the afternoon as they result in you staying up much later, and interrupting your sleep pattern. If you do take a nap, keep it at or around 20 minutes.
7) Take a break: Working or studying for much longer than 50 minutes at a time becomes unproductive. You should take a break, even if it’s for just 5 minutes, before going back to work.
8) Sleep on time: A consistent sleep routine will allow you to get more out of your rest. Try not to dramatically change when you sleep during the weekends and weekdays.
9) No phones in bed: Once in bed, don’t use electronics. Between the bright light and the activity, your brain won’t be prepared to sleep.
