Taipei American School held the Volleyball Invitational in the Upper School Joie Gymnasium from Sept. 6-7. The varsity boys and girls volleyball teams competed against teams from Concordia International School Shanghai, Shanghai American School (Puxi), Seoul Foreign School, and Morrison Academy Taichung.
The girls volleyball team, who led in the tournament with all wins, won the Volleyball International title. “I think this tournament was a launching point for our team: it demonstrated our mental tenacity, our composure to perform under the pressure of a big crowd, and how much potential we have yet to activate,” Emily H. (’20), co-captain for varsity girls volleyball, said.
Mr. William Fillbach, the head coach for the girls team, encouraged the team to continue improving even after winning the championship in this tournament. “Let’s not leave dissatisfied.  Let’s leave hungry. Hungry for more. For ourselves. For the team. For our school. For the game. Let us continue to refine what we already know and to execute to the best of our ability.  Continue to trust and believe in ourselves and our team,” Mr. Fillbach said.
The boys team also fought hard against strong teams and won third place. “Although [we] lost two games, I think that our young teammates gained a lot of experience, and really helped us grow to become better [during this tournament],” Kyle H. (’20), co-captain of varsity boys volleyball, said.
Throughout this experience, both boys and girls volleyball teams were able to bond with their team while also preparing themselves for the upcoming games in the season. “I think the whole experience of Varsity weekend was a good experience for everyone and it will help us become a better team,” Kyle said.
