“Artificial intelligence has a huge contribution towards our world and we should definitely continue developing it.” says Emily Hsu, one of the deputy headshare of the Advisory Panel on the Question of Sustainable Development of Artificial Intelligence. Humans have been developing Artificial Intelligence for a long time According to Merriam-Webster, artificial intelligence (AI) is the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior and a branch of computer science dealing with the simulation of intelligent behavior in computers. The United Nations had made a goal about the Advisory Panel on the Question of Sustainable Development of Artificial Intelligence which stated three tops about AI. Addressing the economic implications of weak Artificial Intelligence, regulating autonomous weapons systems, methods to foster global coordination on Artificial Intelligence research and development.
The Advisory Panel on the Question of Sustainable Development of Artificial Intelligence is focused on regulating autonomous weapons system. AI is dangerous since we can’t control the decisions AI make and their actions. Some of the autonomous weapons or AI weapons are designed with features like facial recognition, and decision-making abilities. The problem with AI is that they have immense destructive capabilities. They are designed to recognize the people that they should kill and should not kill, but many accidents happen. For example, when the US and tried to use autonomous weapons to go to attack the terrorists, the AI could not distinguish terrorists and villagers. Many people lost their family members since innocent people were killed due to weak artificial intelligence. This shows that we should take the threat of AI more seriously. Think about it: if these weapons are used by terrorists, than many innocent people will die. Thus, with regulations, AI poses less of a threat towards innocent civilians.
Another one of the goals is regarding methods to foster global coordination on Artificial Intelligence research and development. This goals means that we should encourage the global coordination on developing and researching AI. This goal is important since that AI the development of AI now is very weak and not a lot of coordination globally. Also, this topic also goes into regulating autonomous weapons system since if we can improve our AI technology, the autonomous weapons will be designed better resulting in less innocent people killed. Also, if the world works together, the development of AI will level up at a high rate that in a few years. This means that the problems of AI will be solved quicker, and the impact that AI will have towards us will be greater.
The last topic is the Advisory Panel on the Question of Sustainable Development of Artificial Intelligence deals with the economic implications of weak Artificial Intelligence. This goal exists because one concern regarding AI is that it is taking over the jobs of humans. For instance, a waiter or waitress can lose his or her jobs since AI can take over their duty. The advantage of AI towards, bosses do not have to pay for their employee, and can just buy robots that speaks to people. “It shouldn’t be possible that AI is going to take over since not everyone’s jobs will be taken because there are still jobs that only humans can do.” says Austin Wen, a delegate at The Advisory Panel on the Question of Sustainable Development of Artificial Intelligence committee. AI will most likely not take over jobs of actors/actresses or comedians since it is part of human nature to enjoy watching other humans. Austin Wen also stated that “the AI right now is not strong enough, so we still need human to power them. So AI taking over our jobs may not be a huge concern right now. There are still things that need human labour.”
Even though there are some threats that artificial intelligence has towards us, I think we should definitely continue developing it. The UN is also making huge decisions about improving weak artificial intelligence, economic problems, and also autonomous weapons. I hope that in a few years the AI will be safer, more developed and used more often in our daily lives.
